Crispy Pita Bread Chips

Pita bread chips are a delightful way to use up day-old bread, turning it into a crunchy snack that's perfect for dipping. The air fryer excels at this task, ensuring each piece dries evenly for a satisfying crunch without the need for deep frying.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium pita breads, about 240 g total, preferably a day old
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, or 30 ml neutral rapeseed oil
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 tsp dried oregano or dried mixed herbs
  • ½ tsp garlic granules
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika, optional
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 170°C for 3 minutes.
  2. Split each pita into two thinner rounds if possible, then cut into triangles or squares about 4–5 cm wide.
  3. Put the pita pieces in a large bowl, drizzle over the oil, and toss to coat lightly.
  4. Mix the salt, oregano, garlic granules, paprika, and pepper in a small bowl, then sprinkle over the pita while tossing again.
  5. Load half the pita into the air fryer basket in a loose layer.
  6. Air fry at 170°C for 4 minutes, then shake the basket and separate any stuck pieces.
  7. Cook for a further 2–4 minutes, checking every minute from the 6-minute mark.
  8. Transfer the chips to a wire rack or baking tray to cool for 5 minutes.
  9. Repeat with the remaining pita, adjusting the temperature if needed.
