Air Fryer Recipe
Chilli Lime Avocado Fries
Chilli Lime Avocado Fries offer a zesty, spicy twist to your snack game, perfect for air frying with minimal oil.
Ingredients
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 lime (zested and juiced)
- 1 teaspoon chilli powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- ½ cup plain flour (or gluten-free alternative)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or a gluten-free option)
- Cooking spray or a small amount of oil for the air fryer
Method
- Slice avocados in half, remove the stone, peel, and slice each half into 3 or 4 lengths.
- In a shallow dish, combine flour with salt and pepper.
- In another dish, beat the eggs.
- Mix panko breadcrumbs with lime zest, chilli powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, salt, and pepper.
- Dredge avocado slices in flour, dip in beaten egg, and coat with seasoned panko mixture.
- Preheat air fryer to 200°C (400°F) and lightly spray the basket with cooking spray or oil.
- Arrange avocado fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
Why this works in an air fryer
The air fryer uses rapid convection to create a crispy exterior on the panko-coated avocados while keeping the inside creamy, thanks to the high moisture content of avocados.
Equipment notes
Assumes a standard 3.5-litre basket; in dual-zone models, use the smaller drawer to maintain airflow, adjusting time by 1-2 minutes if needed.
Common pitfalls
- Avocado fries turning mushy? Ensure avocados are just ripe, not overripe, to maintain structure.
- Breadcrumbs not adhering? Pat avocados dry before flouring to improve coating adherence.
- Uneven browning? Rotate the basket halfway through cooking to ensure even exposure to heat.
Variations & substitutions
- Use smoked paprika instead of chilli powder for a smoky flavour.
- Substitute lime with lemon for a different citrus note.
- Try crushed tortilla chips in place of panko for added crunch and flavour.
Storage & reheating
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days; reheat in the air fryer at 180°C for 3-4 minutes to regain crispiness.
