Air Fryer Recipe
Cheese and Herb Air Fryer Croutons
Croutons should have a satisfying crunch with a hint of chewiness, and an air fryer is ideal for achieving this texture. The quick convection heat crisps the bread while a touch of oil ensures the herbs and cheese adhere beautifully.
Ingredients
- 180g day-old bread, cut into 1.5–2cm cubes
- 2 tbsp olive oil, plus 1 tsp extra if the bread is very dry
- 25g finely grated Parmesan or mature Cheddar
- 1 tsp dried mixed herbs
- 1/2 tsp garlic granules
- 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tsp finely chopped fresh parsley or chives, optional
- Optional: 1/4 tsp smoked paprika or mustard powder
Method
- Cut the bread into 1.5–2cm cubes, including some crust pieces.
- Preheat the air fryer to 180°C for 3 minutes.
- Put the bread cubes in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and toss until glossy.
- Add dried herbs, garlic granules, salt, pepper, and any paprika or mustard powder, then toss again.
- Add the finely grated cheese last and toss lightly.
- Tip the cubes into the air fryer basket and spread them out.
- Air fry at 180°C for 4 minutes, then shake the basket and turn any pale pieces.
- Cook for a further 2–4 minutes, checking after 2 minutes.
- Tip the croutons onto a cool plate or tray for 5 minutes before serving.
- Scatter fresh parsley or chives over the croutons if using.
